Dear Comrade, more than six months ago, I watched a trailer for an episode of Grownish on Instagram, that’s my case study for today... So hold your phone (or any device you reading this with ) at a comfortable angle and let’s reason this thing together yeah?….yeah.
First things first, how are you doing? (psst…this is a cue for you to leave a comment or send a reply mail if you feel like it). Sometimes talking to strangers reduces the tension of not wanting to spill your guts to a person which might make you feel embarrassed afterwards. The mask of anonymity sometimes helps.
Back to the matter…
In that particular episode, Zoey (the lead character) who had made a resolve to change for the better and stop making hasty decisions had done exactly what she had promised not to do. My curiosity led me to the comment section…and out of hundreds of them, one stood out for me…
It went along the lines of - “Zoey just keeps repeating her mistakes, I don’t think she will ever change”
This comment…it blurs out the fact that WE’RE HUMANS. We make decisions to change, to do better, to evolve, to improve; and oftentimes than not, sometimes for a fleeting moment, sometimes longer - we go back to old habits, we remain stagnant, we backslide…we relapse.
And it’s normal.
Change is not easy, deciding/saying you want to change is admittedly, quite easy compared to efforts you make towards transformation…that’s where the real work is. It’s an innate trait for humans to feel comfortable in their “normal” ways/patterns.
Familiar is safer and easier, it’s what we’re used to albeit sometimes detrimental.
To change, to improve is to accept your human-ness, to make yourself accountable for your actions, to not be too hard on yourself, to accept and learn your lessons from your relapses and trudge on, using them as guidelines.
It takes a lot of patience, discipline and consistency - Yes
It might take a long time - Yes
But it’s worth it.
Some might say my view is flawed, shallow, myopic…well…
In other news, the Queen of England died this week. While some people were mourning, some people on Twitter were going haywire with their comments…so many contrasting opinions, facts, and controversies, it was mildly intriguing though, and it had me scrolling into the late hours of the night. Now more than ever I want to know what Princess Diana was like and the real truth behind her death.
